Open-carry enthusiasts in Ohio protest a police shooting that killed a young black man in a WalMart

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

Good morning:

In this bizarre country where up is down and down is up, open-carry enthusiasts in Beavercreek, OH demonstrated inside a Walmart against a white police officer for shooting and killing twenty-two-year-old John Crawford III inside the Walmart on August 5th. They openly carried their weapons as they strolled through the store.

Crawford, who is black, was carrying an unloaded toy pellet gun that he apparently intended to purchase when the officer, who responded to a 911 call from a Walmart customer reporting a man with an unboxed AR-15 waving it around and pointing it at people, confronted and shot him to death. A state grand jury refused to indict the officer, however, a federal grand jury is now investigating whether to indict him for violating Crawford’s civil rights.

Raw Story reported on Monday,

About 40 open-carry activists protested the Aug. 5 police shooting of 22-year-old John Crawford III at the Beavercreek retailer after a grand jury declined last month to charge the officer who killed him.

In addition to weapons, the demonstrators carried signs that said “I am John Crawford” and “Serve and Protect. Not Serve to Kill.”

According to attorney Michael Wright, who represents Crawford’s father, he watched a store video that shows Crawford walking around the store with the unpackaged toy rifle that he picked up in the toy department and carrying it in his left hand as he was holding a cell phone to his ear with his while speaking the mother of his two children.

Crawford’s father and Wright said the video showed Crawford carrying the BB gun in his left hand, pointed at the floor, except when he momentarily swung the rifle to his shoulder.

Although there were other shoppers in the store, no one else called 911.

And the killings continue.

I just read on my local news station a 18 year old was shot by police in St. Louis. I’m not sure if the policeman shot him 16. It is unclear if he was actuly shot 16 times or if that’s how many bullets was fired. Either way, do the police REALLY need to unload the whole fuc*ing clip? Excuse my language but this is getting real old.

Interesting, but the protest wasn’t really relevant, since Mr. Crawford was not openly carrying when he was shot and killed. He was considering a purchase. I think these gun enthusiasts cynically used his death to promote their own agenda. The problem has nothing to do with citizens’ exercising their 2nd Amendment right, and everything to do with systemic racism.

    • Malisha says:

True that, BUT they probably did show that, since white men carrying real guns are not killed while a black man carrying a toy gun WAS, the killing of Crawford was a racist hate crime.

Malisha, I don’t see much similarity between walking around outside in a group, carrying protest signs and minding one’s own business while shopping. Even the guy who was briefly interviewed admitted the two situations aren’t the same. I agree with him that the police over-reacted, but the reason they did is much more complex and disturbing than simply “depriving” Mr. Crawford of is 2nd amendment right (which he wasn’t exercising in the first place.)

I do not shop at Walmart and will never step foot in a walmart. I am glad people who love their guns stood up for John Crawford and thank God there was not mass casualties from law enforcement over reacting AGAIN! I personally would not be against every Tom Dick and Harry carrying if they stood up for every wrongful victim of a gun crime. Trayvon, Michael, John and the list goes on. Instead most people just assume the victim to be in the wrong because of the color of their skin. This is very shocking that they are actually agreeing that the police over reacted. The dumbass who called 911 and lied his ass off should be charged. I don’t care if they charge him with felony jaywalking his ass needs to be locked up. Jmo

    • Disappointed says:

Im sure you all know the felony jay walking is snark. I believe he should be charged. There has to be some law that protects innocent people from being gunned down because some idiot lied.

      • Malisha says:

Making a false report to police IS a crime.
Also, he conspired with state actors (police) to deprive a citizen of his constitutional rights under color of state law. Also a crime.

    • Agreed dissapointed. The most important thing to do beyond protesting, is to vote. Dewine and the special prosecutor he appointed to present evidence to the grand jury are both up for reelection. Vote people.

If I were in that Walmart I’d be calling 911 b/c of all the weapons. Obviously Walmart had been taken over by a gang of thugs (even white guys can be thugs). Alas, since I don’t shop Walmart, that wouldn’t happen.

  5. Two sides to a story says:

I’m against open carry but think this protest is righteous because it puts a spotlight on why a black man was killed over a toy gu.
