Louisiana prohibits suing oil and gas companies

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

Good morning:

Republican Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana did the unthinkable yesterday. He signed a bill into law that prohibits suing oil and gas companies for the damages they cause.

Russia Today reports,

The law, SB 469, has thwarted a levee district in New Orleans’ East Bank – the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) – from pushing forward with a lawsuit introduced last July against 97 oil and gas companies for damage done to the state’s wetlands. According to the suit, the firms exposed New Orleans to catastrophic damage from hurricanes Rita and Katrina by dredging and cutting thousands of miles of pipes and canals through barrier islands and wetlands which, left intact, would have protected the coastal city, The Times-Picayune Newspaper reports.

Absolutely outrageous violation of the public trust.

This new law is more political than anything, most cases against the petroleum industry would actually be filed in Federal Court, and this law will have absolutely no effect on that. But it does look good to the GOP/TP money grubbers who think that this will prevent legal action…

Well obviously there needs to be a class action against Jindal and every oil and gas company in Louisiana for conspiracy to deprive citizens of their First Amendment rights under color of state law.

The First Amendment gives citizens the right to petition their governments for redress of wrongs. You can’t just decide to take that away wholesale without a constitutional challenge.

I am so disgusted with our so-called political leaders. Not just the ones who we know are our enemy, but those who run on a platform of being for “the little guy.” I just left that area a few weeks ago visiting relatives and I literally cried. Not only do oil and gas companies need to answer for the dredging, etc., that they do, they also need to answer for the environmental damage they do to the citizens healthwise. Every third relative that I saw had health problems-respiratory, cancer, something akin to PTSD, and I heard about lots of cousins and friends who had limbs amputated because of “poor blood circulation’. I am not talking about older people but those in their early 40’s. There has not been the kind of joy I remember in my relatives’ eyes since Hurricane Katrina, and SOMEONE must answer for that.

I consider it environmental racism at it’s worse. I compare it to the Plessy v Ferguson decision-which coincidentally was a New Orleans case. The more things change the more they stay the same. Have these people READ the Constitution? And most of them profess to be Christians, so I wonder alse have they read the Bible.

I couldn’t agree more. The problem is that we are THINKING that the government is there to solve or prevent problems, when that is clearly not the case. The government is there to RULE. The rest of it is an elaborate fraud.
