Recent studies at Penn State trace light skin color to genetic mutation 10,000 years ago

Good morning again:

From time to time, we have discussed the question, why racism?

My own view is that we are all basically the same and skin color, like hair color or eye color, is merely a cosmetic difference that has nothing to do with intelligence or anything of substance. I believe racists are stupid and willfully ignorant white people driven by hate who deserve to be publicly confronted and humiliated at every opportunity. I do not believe that racism has ceased to be a problem except for black people who complain about discrimination. In fact, I think that is one of the most idiotic accusations that I have ever heard. Racism has always been a major problem in this country and if anything it’s a bigger problem now than in the recent past because so many racists are so loud and proud about it.

Well, here is an interesting article in Penn State News that traces all light skinned people back to a genetic mutation in a single individual approximately 10,000 years ago.

All instances of a gene mutation that contributes to light skin color in Europeans came from the same chromosome of one person who most likely lived at least 10,000 years ago, according to Penn State College of Medicine researchers.

While the genetics of skin color is largely unclear, past research using zebrafish by the College of Medicine’s Keith Cheng identified a key gene that contributes to lighter skin color in Europeans and differs from West Africans. In 2005, Cheng reported that one amino acid difference in the gene SLC24A5 is a key contributor to the skin color difference between Europeans and West Africans.

“The mutation in SLC24A5 changes just one building block in the protein, and contributes about a third of the visually striking differences in skin tone between peoples of African and European ancestry,” said Cheng, distinguished professor of pathology. Lighter skin color may have provided an advantage due to for the better creation of vitamin D in the lesser sunlight characteristic of northern latitudes.

In this current part of the project, Victor Canfield, assistant professor of pharmacology, together with Cheng, studied DNA sequence differences across the globe. They studied segments of genetic code that have a mutation and are located closely on the same chromosome and are often inherited together. This specific mutation in SLC24A5, called A111T, is found in virtually everyone of European ancestry.

Hopefully, Drs. Cheng and Canfield will soon bury theories of racial superiority based on skin color beneath an avalanche of scientific evidence.

More on topic. Here is a fine article about skin color:

Knowledge, or lack thereof, is power.

  2. bettykath says:

Cristi OConnor suggests that a federal grand jury is looking at fogen.

    • gblock says:

Does anyone know whether Fogen has been able to collect for the “painting” yet?

      • Malisha says:

My personal belief is that the whole thing was some sort of complicated hoax. IF he is collecting it is not from the painting but some kind of money-laundering thing that he wanted a cover for. Four bidders and a total of 96 bids and a final price of $100,099.99? I don’t think so. We were treated to some more theater. Only in this one he didn’t give roles to police officers or corrupt officials; he took the spotlight alone. To compensate himself for a poor Christmas. To cheer himself up. Just imagine, he lets people bid on a painting and agrees to deliver it in person; how does the cowardly paranoid make sure he’s not walking into a trap where some thugs shoot him through the heart with a hollowpoint bullet? I’m not buying it. The only thing I’m sure of from the whole stupid caper is that I will never give ebay any more of my business, not because of letting him masturbate on their site all that time, but for kicking off a perfectly valid painting (by Michael D’Antuono) that was in the midst of bidding, because it portrayed a racist murderer in a bad light.

        • MDH says:

          I agree with you 100%.

The Michael D’Antuono painting says everything that is true about the USA in one stark image. That’s the problem with “post-racial” America. They don’t want to talk about the truth and feel that not bringing up the subject will make it go away.

The fake original painting done by GZ makes a mockery out of my country. F gods, guns and all that BS. A great country needs MEN, not piss stains like GZ. And by MEN, I do not exclude the female gender. If my wee little mom were still in life, she would not have shied away from looking GZ in the eye and calling him what he is – “nothing but a bully coward who picks on the weak”.

GZ should make another art work for his man crush idol – Frank Taffe.

He could use the same flag, but put block letters that say:

“these colors don’t run, ‘cept from people of color”

          Or maybe:

“Oh show me the way to the next whiskey bar”

          • Malisha says:

Ain’t it strange that the Ebay behavior did not catch a lot of publicity? I would have thought that removing a painting by a known American artist with a clear-cut history for painting politically controversial pieces would have resounded through our press like the shot from Hell into Cloud 9. Yet the silence was deafening. Our freedom by means of free press is, at best, a thing of the past and at worst, another big lie.

      • towerflower says:

My feeling is the winning bid is bogus, a person who had only 3 feedback. My guess is that it will drop to the lowest next bid which was legit and in the end he most likely only got a few thousand.

He wanted the world to know about the painting, which is why I believe that Jr. chimed in to get the ball rolling with the press. He still has the need to be in the spotlight.

  3. bettykath says:

    So whites are mutants. 🙂

  4. MDH says:

I guess the line would have to change to:

No matter where you come from, as long as you are a white man, you are an African {black man}.

Or as the late great Harry Smith liked to always say:

    “What goes around comes around.”

  5. MDH says:

The genetic marker would also further cement my opinion that the man who penned this tune was a genius.

  6. MDH says:

If this is genetic marker is true, then that would make it incontrovertible that the “father” of the “white race” was a black man.

  7. Malisha says:

So the first person with that mutation was the father of all racists?
Hmmmm…a work of historical fiction based on HIM. Let’s see, what to call him, what to call him . . . uh . . . let’s see. The names back then, they would have been primitive names such as “goo” and “kuk” and “eep,” right? But of course, he was different. Maybe…

We can call him “Fogen”! 😆

  8. MDH says:

My first major was in Geology.

Anyhow, rocks are often classified using a ternary diagram wherein each of the three points on the diagram represents a 100% composition of a primary mineral. Rocks are then identified because they will plot such that there is LESS diversity WITHIN the group than ACROSS groups.

Well, it has long been shown that there is MORE diversity within the arbitrary classification of humans based on skin color than across. So it does not take a braniac to conclude that skin color based human categorization is junk.

And that does not take into account environmental stressors.

If a Martian came to Earth, he/she/it might report back that there is a sub-species of human that spend most of their time in Golds Gym.

    The IDs being:

A propensity to stare in a mirror while making odd gestures

A total lack of body hair

    A bronze skin tone

    A profound amount of musculature

A tendency to walk with flared lats and scrunched buttox muscles where

A profound love of all things spandex

And arguably the attributes I cite in jest more significantly define the “Golds Race” more starkly from the rest of humankind than skin color.

  9. towerflower says:

One of my sisters had participated in the National Geographic DNA study (I think it is still available). It traces back your DNA through the thousands of years and shows a map tracing the history through time. Everyone starts in Africa.

  10. Racists are often cultural ding-dongs. They latch onto minute cultural differences and make a big deal out of these.
