Why is Kendrick Johnson wearing different pants when his body is found?

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Good morning:

While bouncing back and forth between reading comments here and Firedoglake, where I am hosting Over Easy on MyFDL, I suddenly realized that Kendrick Johnson’s body was clothed in different pants than he was wearing when he entered the gym.

Compare the long pants he was wearing when he entered the gym, by looking at the video that shows him in the hall before he enters the gym, to the blue jean shorts he was wearing in the tube, as shown in the photograph that displays his lower body.

While you’re at it, take a look at the athletic shoes that appear in that photograph and ask yourself who placed them there and when did they do it? I don’t believe Kendrick could have or would have placed them there.

Next question: Is he wearing those shoes when he enters the gym? Difficult for me to tell from the video whether the white athletic shoes that he is wearing when he enters the gym have the red trim that is visible in the photograph.

More questions: Why and where did he change his pants and why was he looking for another pair of shoes?

Quick guess: He likely would have changed his pants in a bathroom and would have to have taken off his shoes before removing his pants. I doubt there were video cameras in the bathrooms, so that would have been a good place for an ambush. Also may have been an opportune location to roll him up in a mat.

Final Question: What happened to his long pants?

Crazy 1946 do a little more research a post stated he was kill in G bathroom (which is next to the old gym) with a weight and rolled up at 8 (the time the color guard game was over) I’m not trying to be rude just check it out all the info is out but for some reason (like with the travon martin case) it all gets turned around there is also a diagram of the gym you and the professor should check out! Also I think the girl was just part of the set up and not really his girlfriend bc kj was phoned by the dad how did he get his #? Its just crazy to think all this bc of a little stupid ass fight oh yeah and there had to be someone involved at the school to get the gym remodeled that fast and who is the football coach he probably felt some type of way bc he liked the kid who kj beat up who then quit the team imagine a black person destroys your sons dreams of playing football bc we all know that hs football in small southern towns is a way of life hypothetically speaking don’t know but my theory feels right I cant stop thinking about it professor its like all of a sudden b4 any news release any of the new footage I knew just tell me if you agree professor!

from part 5 of the Ebony articles:

Kendrick “KJ” Johnson did not die from being beaten up by multiple suspects. He died from one powerful blow—inflicted by one person, while others likely held him down.

In an exclusive interview with EBONY.com, Dr. William Anderson, the Florida pathologist who performed the second autopsy on KJ, reveals, “Kendrick took a fatal blow to his right neck that opened his skin up to his jaw bone. It most likely led to cardiac arrest, which is what I wrote in my report.”
The first autopsy performed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) claimed, it now appears correctly, that decomposition and his upside down position in the wrestling mat in which he was found, accounted for the distortion of KJ’s face.

According to Dr. Anderson, that may be the only thing that is correct.

“When I read the GBI autopsy report, the first thing that popped out was the ‘Cause of Death,’ ‘Positional Asphyxia.'” In such a case, “The respiratory muscles eventually give out and there’s a lot of pulmonary edema [fluid).”

Lungs filled with water weigh 800 to 900 grams each.

“But Kendrick’s lungs only weighed, 200 or 240 grams. So if Kendrick died from positional asphyxia, how do we explain the absence of pulmonary adema?” Anderson asks.

    Kendrick Johnson

Kendrick “KJ” Johnson did not die from being beaten up by multiple suspects. He died from one powerful blow—inflicted by one person, while others likely held him down.

In an exclusive interview with EBONY.com, Dr. William Anderson, the Florida pathologist who performed the second autopsy on KJ, reveals, “Kendrick took a fatal blow to his right neck that opened his skin up to his jaw bone. It most likely led to cardiac arrest, which is what I wrote in my report.”

That report has since been delivered to Michael J. Moore, the Federal Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, who is reviewing it and may soon open an official investigation into Kendrick Johnson’s homicide.

Kendrick Johnson, known as “KJ” to family and friends, was a seventeen-year-old student at Lowndes County High School in Valdosta, Georgia. A good athlete, a good student, a good son and most of all, a good person, KJ disappeared after his fourth block class, January 10, 2013, at about 1PM.

At approximately 9:30 AM the next day, a teacher was conducting his “Life Sports” class in the old gym, when students summoned him to look into a rolled up blue wrestling mat. It was stacked with all the rest on the side of the gym. When the teacher did, he found Kendrick Johnson’s partially clothed body inside. He was upside down.

KJ’s feet stuck out from one end, his face and upper chest from the other. He wore no clothes from the waist up. His face looked like he had been beaten. A forensic pathologist’s autopsy would be able to tell what kind of physical damage he sustained that led to his death. Armed with that knowledge, law enforcement could begin a homicide investigation and answer the questions of how and why he got into that mat.

Those results, with suspects identified, would then be turned over to the State of Georgia for prosecution. But that’s not the way it happened.

Anderson relates what he did differently during the second autopsy.

“I dissected areas of the neck, not dissected before [during the GBI autopsy]. That’s how I found a neck hemmorhage. There was swelling to the right side of the jaw skin and underneath, which is the neck hemmorhage. The first EMT on the scene also mentioned that area.”

Yet there is nothing in the GBI autopsy report, or any other police report, indicating this because as he relates, the dissection was not done. Anderson says that “localized bleeding” at the hemmorage site indicates, “Death was sudden.” He concluded that KJ died from “blunt force trauma to the right part of his neck, consistent with inflicted injuries… [and] needs to be investigated as an open homicide investigation.”

(anyone want to see something really crazy OT? Mayor of Canada’s largest city, has recently admitted crack cocaine use and the political gloves are off, but this newly released video is really crazy. The mayor seems upset at being called a ‘bird’ (female person he probably means, a girl, a chick) even more than called liars, thieves. Really crazy stuff to see this level of raw anger out of anyone, inebriated or not. He knows he’s ranting about first degree murder and wants the guy to get in the ring with him so he can do it)

    • ay2z says:

OT Q Jon Stewart, what’s your plan for the Daily Show tonight, now that you should have the video of your Nov 4th show in hand? Whatever, should be a good follow up show. Give it to him, Jon!

      • ay2z says:

All joking aside, will this be about crack and political survival, or will this lead into an investigation of the murder of a kid back in March?

When was today’s video taken, in relation to the death threats and plans to kill what was referred to a well trained ‘kid’ in the ring? I wasn’t paying attention to this mayor’s crack allegations in the past, but is today’s video release only the tip of a murder investigation.

If so, what does this rant mean for a person’s admission about his plans to kill a ‘kid’ who has allegedly got a rep in the room negotiating a fight.

        • ay2z says:

Not a ‘kid’ by legal definition, but a 21 year old college student. There’s a Ford connection. What one misses when they do not have a tv news on, but pic and choose from the website.

Mayor’s connections to the murder suggested months ago and for some reason, an unusual plea deal by the crown (prosecution) reduced the murder sentence for the shooter, to manslaughter. Sounds like they are after more and bigger fish.

And yes, Anthony Smith was photographed with the mayor in casual clothing, and yes, he’s not white.

        • ay2z says:

Tonight the attention has turned to a mayor in trouble, with crack and/or alcohol problems. His mother went on video to say he has no problems other than judgement and his only addiction is his ‘weight’.

About the mayor being forced to step down, apparently legal opinion says it won’t happen as of the past hour.

I don’t think the city can intervene and do anything unless [Ford] shows up at work inebriated and is causing disturbances.

          Lawyer John Mascarin

Sounds more like an episode of Dr. Phil with a family in denial who continue to enable.

What happens when a politician, here or there, has a problem like this? Does it take good supporters to make the person with a problem, face reality? Or does it take the electorate to petition for a step down?

Aside from any links to Anthony Smith’s death and the alleged Somali drug gangs.

And does it matter that someone is ‘set up’ or baited into that inebriated rant? The back up mayor wants to understand the context, say’s everybody does this, or might know someone who does this, in private moments.

Slipped and fell while reading into a rolled up gym mat?

Sheeeeyit that’s crazy! Since nobody claims to have witnessed the event itself, this would have to have been deduced from the evidence. Let’s see.

EVIDENCE: He was upside down in a very tight place.

DEDUCTION: He was obviously reading. (It’s an activity known to reverse gravity and cause the laws of physics to be misapplied.)

EVIDENCE: His face was smashed in by blunt force trauma.

DEDUCTION: It was an accident. (Faces get that way at times.)

EVIDENCE: He was dead — from asphyxiation.

DEDUCTION: He slipped and fell. All young healthy African American males asphyxiate when they accidentally slip and fall.

    That’s about it, folks.

  6. ay2z says:

Clues to the color of the pants issue might be gleaned from reviewing the best video sources of the hallway seconds as Kendrick passes the bright doorway the right side, to his left. The bright light appears to be daylight, where the hallway lighting appears to be artificial and not as bright and not likely any sort of reqpresentation of natural daylight.

As Prof has observed, is clearly green, but we need to consider the darkening and spotlight highlighting of that particular video. The green could be a color cast from a combination of the type and level of lighting of the original video (say fluorescent that gives a greenish cast without the warm or daylight rendition) and the alternation of the video for publication. The other boys in the video, are on the other side of the hallway and maybe nearer/brighter for the wide angle camera position.

Finding the same video handled by different sources, maybe we can see by stopping Kendrick’s movements past the bright door that may have natural daylight, might indicate if these pants are in reality, a deep blue jean denim color.

The best stopping points would be Kendrick’s left leg nearest the bright natural lighting as he moves his left leg. Trialand error to stop the action, but worth different people trying this on various video copies that have been published. It’s early in the video, where a dark leg is illuminated around the 5 second mark.

Daylight allow blue to reflect, fluorescent does not, unless its specfically for full spectrum.

Experiment and see, especiallly if you have the ability to copy a video and use editing software to stop the action, I don’t.

    More from the Ebony investifgation:

” Julie P. Gardner, Assistant Deputy Director (Medical Examiner’s Office) of the GBI’s Division of Forensic Science, sent an email to Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson:

“The official case and manner of death for the following juvenile decedent Kendrick Johnson is as follow [sic]:

    Immediate Cause: POSITIONAL ASPHYXIA

    Manner of Death: Accident

How injury occurred: Slipped and fell upside-down while reading into the central-hole of a vertically stored rolled-up gym mat and became trapped,” Ms. Gardner writes.

Reading what? Wouldn’t a book have been recovered if this scenario were correct? Further, it contradicts Sheriff Prine’s statement that Kendrick was trying to retrieve a shoe that had fallen into the mat when he fell and got trapped. “

  10. bettykath says:

Prof, you’re right. Kendrick was wearing shorts.

As to the competence of the investigation:
“When [coroner] Watson got there, it was chaos. The entire scene around the body was trampled by everyone from curious coaches and teachers, to the cops themselves. To say the crime scene was contaminated is putting it mildly. Little evidence was gathered; no one was questioned; and no crime scene photos were taken. The body was eventually carted off to the Harrington Funeral Home, where an interested worker did snap the only photo extant of Kendrick’s face in death. ”

    From the coroner:

“In his official report of Kendrick’s death, under the “Person Found Dead” box, Lowndes County Coroner W.M. “Bill” Watson’s noted, “Was never told who or when this body was found.” Then, under “Description of Circumstances,” Watson gets critical.

“I was not notifedi n [sic] this death until 15:45 hours [3;45 PM]. The investigative climate was very poor to worse when I arrived on the scene. The body had been noticeably moved. The scene had been compromised and there was no cooperation from law enforcement at the scene. Furthermore, the integrity of the evidence bag was comprimised [sic] on January 13, 2013 by opening the sealed bag and exhibiting the dead body to his father.”

“Under the box “Medical Examiner Name,” instead of simply inserting his name, Watson wrote, “Paramedics responding to 911 call 01-10-13, time unknown I will Subpoena this report [sic].”

Watson concluded in the “Comments” section:

“I do not approve of the manner this case was handled. Not only was the scene compromised, the body was moved. The integrrety [sic] was breached by opening a sealed body bag, information necessary for my lawful investigation was withheld.”

  11. Drew says:

Kind of off topic here, but I have to say that easily the DUMBEST argument in support of the accident theory is that the Johnsons are looking for a “payday”.

First off, as should be overwhelmingly obvious, that’s irrelevant to the investigation. Either he was murdered or not. The investigation was conducted shoddily and as of yet we do not know the truth. The Johnsons behavior is irrelevant.

From another standpoint, the “payday” argument is even stupider, because whether this was an accident, cover-up for murder, or something else, the parents will sue the school, and a decision will be made by a court whether or not they will be compensated. I believe this would be the case regardless of the murder investigation.

I had two students engaging in horseplay during lunch last month; one fell down and bumped his head. After a hospital visit, it was determined he had gotten a mild concussion. Mom is suing the school for the bill.

I’m not saying that any accident or death that occurs at school is grounds for a lawsuit, but clearly the opportunity for a “payday” is there whether or not a murder took place.

In this particular case, if Kendrick died the way that has been presented, falling into an unsafe mat, unsupervised in a gym, and then not one staff member whose class he missed nor administrator in charge of student behavior made any attempt to locate him, then I think the school acted with negligence. Call it a “payday” or whatever, but that’s how it goes.

    I’d sue for millions.

    • Regardless of the possibility of a payday, I would want to find out why my kid was dead and I would move heaven and earth until satisfied that I knew the answer.

Any loving parent would do the same, black or white.

Anyone who accuses Kendrick’s parents of seeking a payday is a racist.

This probably just has the status of rumor because the Facebook page was deleted, but from

It had been mere hours after Kendrick “KJ” Johnson’s body had been discovered on January 11, 2013 in the old gym at Lowndes County High School, when classmate Lana Langtry* saw the Facebook post from Frank Kramer, another student from the school.  Shortly after the post, Kramer inexplicably deactivated his account, so the post was no longer visible.

Langtry was concerned, so she went to the Sheriff’s Office.

“He [Kramer] made [other] posts on Facebook that he was going to start killing them off one by one,” she told the detective who took her written statement.

Langtry claimed that KJ and several of his friends were part of a group who called themselves “CVC,” which stands for the “Clyattville Click.”  Kramer had been feuding with people from the CVC.  It seemed like a CVC member, Tony Thompkins, was making overtures to Kramer’s girlfriend Elizabeth.  Kramer was jealous.

Police wondered: could Kramer have acted on that jealousy?  Langtry didn’t know.

In one Ebony Magazine article on Kendrick Johnson, it was noted that Kendrick’s parent’s attorney Chevene King, Jr. who filed a petition on April 15, 2013 to exhume Kendrick’s body, is the son of C.B. King who was a leader in the Abany (Georgia) Movement.

This was a movement in the early 1960’s in which Black citizens took part in demonstrations in an effort to gain their rights through nonviolent direct action.

I have a 7 page pamphlet from that period which reports that in July 1962 this about C.B. King:

Later the same day, Sheriff Campbell broke a walking stick across the head of C.B. King, an attorney and brother of Slater King. Attorney King had gone to the Sheriff’s office to ask about Hansen’s having been beaten in the jail.

The sheriff ordered King out of the office and then struck him. This took place in the Courthouse across the street from Chief Pritchett’s office. A full report was made to the Justice Department and the F.B.I.

    • You all have thoughtful comments says:

C.B. King also ran for governor of Georgia.

A wire photo that I have of C.B. King states:

Sept. 9, 1970–THE WAIT BEGINS–C.B. King, an Albany attorney and only Negro in the race for governor of Georgia, watches a television set in his Atlanta headquarters for returns of Wednesday’s state primary. He is running as a Democrat. There are eights other Democrats and three Republicans seeking the office.

He lost the primary to Jimmy Carter who was later elected governor that year.

    Note on surveillance videos:

3 days after Kendrick’s body was discovered, Investigator Priddy obtained the last 48 hours of surveillance for the entire wing of the school, that included the old gym.

    From Ebony Magazine’s investigative article:

Sometime after Adams got to the scene, Detective Jack Priddy arrived.  The two conferred and Adams told Priddy that the victim, who was unresponsive, was Kendrick Johnson.  And that he was deceased.  Priddy then spoke with Ssgt. Bryce Whitener.  The police had noticed the surveillance cameras outside the gym.  Priddy was assigned to locate the surveillance video.

With Adams’ help, Priddy did locate the video he was seeking.  It showed Kendrick entering the gym at approximately 1:09 PM on January 11, but never leaving.  But, what else could be on the video?

Priddy contacted Scott Forthe, who does information technology for the Lowndes County Board of Education.  The detective explained that he wanted the last forty-eight hours of surveillance for the entire wing of the school, that included the old gym. In turn, Forthe explained that it would take a few days to meet the request.  There were close to forty cameras on that wing of the school.

Three days later on January 14, Priddy obtained a copy of the surveillance video from the old gym, including video from the camera at the exterior entrance to the gym; the cameras in the hallway of the gym; and the cameras inside the gym.  The copy of the surveillance video was placed into property evidence and should still reside in the sheriff’s office.  What is on those tapes is at present unknown to the public.

Could those videos contain images of Kendrick’s homicide and his murderers?

  15. You all have thoughtful comments says:

Back in the school’s gym, Coach Philip Pieplow’s “Life Sports” class was then in progress. Vicki Darnell* and her sister Emily were tired, so they climbed up on the wrestling mats that were rolled up in the corner to lie down. After being up there for a few minutes, Vicki looked down, into one of the mats, and saw feet with socks on them. She figured someone was playing a joke. She asked her sister Emily to take a look.
    She did.

    “Help,” Emily yelled, “help!”

John Clendenon, who was in the class and nearby, came over, climbed the bleachers, followed Emily and Vicki over to the mat in question, looked inside, then summoned Mr. Pieplow to come over. Pieplow climbed on top of the mats. He and Clendenon tried to free the person from the top.

When their efforts failed, they began to move the mats aside, then lowered the one with the person inside it. With an unobstructed view, Pieplow looked inside.

Students were staring. A girl screamed.

    “That was a dead body!”

Upset, Peiplow was having a hard time speaking, but he was able to tell the students to leave.

Shortly before 10:30 AM, the sheriff’s office received a “911” cell phone call from John Clendenon, the student who had discovered a body. The dispatcher relayed the information to Sgt. Adams, that a “code blue” had been received from the old gym at Lowndes High School.

Philip Pieplow was still bending over the immobile figure in the mat.

“I don’t think anybody can help him,” Peiplow said quietly.

Two, white socked feet were sticking out of the blue mat. Sticking out of the other end, “I observed a black male, exposed down to his rib cage. The facial area was severely disfigured and swollen. The only identifying feature to the victim that I observed was the long dreadlocks,” Adams related to his superiors.

    Drew made this comment…
“But when kids found the body the next day it’s because they saw feet sticking out. You’re saying no one spotted feet for a full day?”

Whether or not his arms were over his head or by his side, we know that there was (according to their story) a black/white shoe at the bottom of that mat that had to have had enough space above it so that absolutely no blood dripped on it from Kendrick’s eyes, ears, mouth, or those long, thick dreds. Given that the impossible-to-fit 19in body in that 14in hole had no extra wiggle room to slouch his knees and draw up his legs, I’m certain that his 5’10” body was visible from the top.
Their story claims that it wasn’t until the next day when a cheer girl climbed on top of the mats and saw him.
My question is, “If soooo many people used this spot to store their stuff free of charge instead of getting a locker, didn’t anyone that day or the next morning store or retrieve anything at all???
And my next question is, “If the school was aware of this “free locker” storage area used by the students, why wouldn’t they have a camera in the motion activation zone of all this? Don’t you focus on the trouble zones?

VALDOSTA, Ga. — The camera aimed in the general direction of where Kendrick Johnson was found dead in a rolled-up gym mat in January did not record how his body ended up there because the device was motion activated and the mat was out of its range, a sheriff’s investigator told NBC News.

On Wednesday, video from that camera and about 31 others at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Ga., is expected to be released to Johnson’s parents and the media.

Professor Leatherman, Over the last several days doing research on this case, I have noticed that one of the reasons that this case is actually being looked at, not only in the press but by the FBI/DOJ is because of a large amount on money spent by Kendrick’s parents. Can there be any doubt that one of the problems that many of the minority citizens in this nation face is the high financial cost of justice! Perhaps you might consider writing an article explaining/exposing that problem as it relates to those of limited incomes? I wonder how many here reading your blog realize that for some of us older individuals, even receiving a simple traffic ticket that they were unable to pay, could very well receive what could amount to a “life sentence” as punishment…. To many of us that survive on Social (un)Security, and have extremely limited funds, that is a distinct possibility… While many talk about the cost of medical care, I hear very little talk about the high cost of justice…

    • Drew says:

Yet most white Internet commenters (not the most intelligent cross section of humanity, I admit) believe that the Johnsons are “doing this for the money.” I actually had some “liberal” friends say the same thing about the Martin family over the summer as they lamented the “tragedy on both sides.”

      • izzylizzy says:

I’m white and don’t believe that at all. I believe the parents DESERVE every piece of evidence they ask for so they can work through this, that another independent look at the facts is deemed (especially because the sheriff waited 6 hours to call the coroner, and which because of this, the sheriff deserves ALL the scrutiny he is receiving). I, myself, believe it was a horrible accident. I believe Kendrick crawled up on the mats to look for his shoe… on his hands and knees, looking down into the mats, saw his shoe… and thought he could read down and get it if he held onto the side of the mat. I think once he went in with (let’s say his right arm) and then his head, he lost his grip with his left hand and slid down into the mat, and then gravity came in. He was found with one hand over his head and one along his body so it makes sense. As to why no one could hear him yell for help, the kids were bouncing the basketball and if you watch the youtube video of the reenactment (though not precise) you can barely hear someone when they are yelling inside the map for help.

I don’t know if basketballs bouncing is a very good story. You need to work on that.

          Also, where are the teachers?

He was beaten elsewhere and moved later.

          • izzylizzy says:

They didn’t know he was there or died so of course they had no clue while they were playing basketball. It’s just a theory. Did you watch the youtube video and listen to the guy calling for help while inside the mat? Keep in mind that there were many mats surrounding the one Kendrick was in so that would have dampered his calls for help also.

          • izzylizzy says:

“He was beaten elsewhere and moved later.” Yeah, that’s the only way it would be possible. They would have had to harm him, hide him and then do the cover up at night (i.e. roll in mat). He wasn’t seen leaving the gym on video as far as we know.

Izzylizzy, It would be interesting to hear how you explain away the second autopsy? Or is it your contention that this was a false determination on the part of that medical professional? While I do not know for sure who or how many individuals participated in the death of this child, I have “absolutely” no doubt that he did not simply fall into that rolled up mat! I will however concede that you have the right to hold your opinion of what happened to Kendrick, regardless of what the facts indicate… that is your right..

        • Eric says:

izzylizzy, how do you explain location of his shoes? They were near his thighs and calfs. How do you explain that?

      • crazy1946 says:

Drew, Anyone who would think the Johnsons are “doing this for the money” have no concept of how much pain the loss of a child can bring, trust me there is not enough money to replace your own flesh and blood, well that is unless their whole existence here on this planet is based on money…

        • shyloh says:

I’d spend my entire savings to find out what happened to my child. I’d beg, borrow or steal it. Doesn’t matter. I see a murder here. And it seems like a lot of people are sweeping some crap under the rug. I believe someone mentioned above about two young men waiting for Kendrick. Why on earth did nothing come about. As in where is he? If it were me. I’d go look for my friend. We live in a very sad place people. In this day and age anyway.

Don’t forget the Caylee Marie Anthony case. Those Grandparents and mommy dearest were the one’s out to get “blood” money. JMO.

      • Malisha says:

Racist murder a “tragedy on both sides”? Yep. It’s a tragedy that a Black kid got murdered by a white racist. And it’s a tragedy that whites in this country, a powerful majority, have not been able to rehabilitate themselves after 150 years of clear signs that they need to do so. A tragedy on both sides.

    • Rachael says:

I talk about it all the time. That is what got me into law. It Justice isn’t about truth, it is about how much you can afford to buy. When I was in the 7th grade, my desire was to change that. Change the world, you know. And here 50 years later, I am crying over Kendrick and Trayvon. I haven’t changed it, no one has. But then, I was a nurse too – and I didn’t change the world with regard to health care. Fifty years is a long time. Things should have changed.

    • Malisha says:

I once had a phone conversation with Laurence Tribe, Esq., the Harvard professor who is widely considered to be this country’s top Constitutional scholar (NO it is NOT Dershowitz). I explained to him my belief about the denial of the “life interest.” He said, “You don’t need a novel constitutional theory for your case; what you need is a really good lawyer who works on your case — and ONLY on your case — full-time for a year.” I answered, “What if I don’t have the money to hire a lawyer to work on my case and only on my case for a year?” He agreed that, lacking that money, I could not get justice. So I said, “You’re saying I have Constitutional rights I cannot access without heaps of money?” He said, “unfortunately, yes.” I said, “then those Constitutional rights are not self-executing rights. They’re there, but they’re only for sale, not for claim.” He said, “unfortunately, yes.”

      • crazy1946 says:

Malisha, That story goes a long way toward explaining why the prison system is so over populated with minority members of our society! What a great country that we live in..

  23. Danita says:

Hello everyone, the sneakers appear to have been placed in an upward position because if you look closely at the sneakers they are side by side upwards as if they were placed. If he was kicking them they would have been more sprawled. Secondly as i read the autopsy report one hand upward the other down pants slightly raised above the calf would indicate he was carried and placed in the position.Looking at the video only shows kendrick walking forward and then you dont see him any longer. My question about the video is it’s been almost a year and I no video has been analyzed and possibly shows the crime and or the perpetrators in action in some way. I say that to say do we really believe the video evidence still exists, because I cant imagine at this point finding the truth and all the people including school staff, police, coroner, an anyone else that may be at fault coming forth with the truth. This case really is sad I believe the coroner removed those organs because of fact finding that could prove more internal injuries to report.

    • Drew says:

The coroner may or may not have gotten involved but it would be easy for one of the perpetrators or their parents to influence the driver transporting the body to the funeral home. I don’t get the organs thing; it’s very suspect but I’m not sure it’s going to get us anywhere.

    • MDH says:

I know Outer Drive fairly well. That stretch is a quiet residential boulevard that feeds into Rouge Park at the Detroit border defined by Warren Avenue. The last time I drove through there on the way to my father’s home, there were a significant number of black families living in that area. I think this applies:

“In the United States, where implicit and structural racism persists on a vast scale, is it wise to empower people who almost certainly have irrational and racist fears.”

What I mean is that some of the old timers get what I can best call “black phobia”. They do not want to get to know about “the other” and hide in their hole stewing in fear and paranoia. I saw this, first hand, as my neighborhood became predominantly black. The most sorry ass aspect of this is that getting to know “the others” is something that brings enriches and bring great joy to life.

This person should be put in jail.

Guns and crime are part of Detroit and I had to face them many a time knocking on a door. But the rational person shows the gun and does not shoot first and ask questions later.

The last time it happened was when I went to knock on my fathers door – he had fallen asleep. So the neighbor, came out with a gun and asked what I wanted around there. The point is that he had his shot gun pointed down, kept distance and gave me a chance to show hands and explain.

Keep in mind that where my father lived was an area with a far, far higher crime rate than Dearborn. Home invasions of elderly were common.

I will also point out that I am white and the man confronting me was white.

However, I do dress rough and, being male, can be construed as a hood.

But I still wonder if being white allows one to have a gun shown rather than pointed and fired.

Which brings me back to this incident.

Shooting a 19 year old female without giving her any chance.

IMO, that is being executed because you are black.

Find the Detroit News article and read the comments to see how “post racial” we are surely not.

  24. izzylizzy says:

I think I can answer your question about the shoes. From what I have read, Kendrick was wearing the white ones and went into the gym to get his black ones from where he had stored them in/near/on the mat. His black tennis shoes were his field shoes and he was on his way to the field house. The reason the white shoes were on top of his body (above his legs) is, presumably, when he was struggling in the mat to get out he kicked them off during his attempt. Hope that helps.

    • Two sides to a story says:

He could have been beaten and rolled up unconscious and perhaps struggled to get out. I still don’t believe he would have tried to reach in headfirst to retrieve shoes from a mat. Makes no sense.

      • Drew says:

If he did that before, say, gym class, or before an after school activity, then certainly someone would have found him.

At the very least, the school is negligent for his death even if it was an accident (0.00001% probability it was, just saying).

Not sure why the school would prefer the accident story to murder. Puts them more on the hook, I think.

      • Drew says:

        Like even a student:

“Hey, where’s Kendrick, I just saw him?”
“Oh, he went to grab his shoes.”
“Oh shit, you think he did that dumb move where he dives into the mat again? Maybe he got stuck and fell in this time.”

        • izzylizzy says:

His two friends were actually waiting for him outside the gym when he went in to get his shoes. They waited and he never came out, they thought he had gone out the other door to the field house and they went onto class at the field house. I don’t know what they thought when he never showed up at the field house.

          • Drew says:

Odd. If he didnt show up to class, where were the teachers / administrators?

At my current school, we don’t get too many cuts in general, so if a present student fails to report to class without an excuse, we’re all over it, trying to find them, phone calls, security, secretaries, administrators involved. You never know…

Even at a school where cutting is rampant (I worked at one where mostly all kids cut at one point or another, and 10% per class would be cutting on any given day. But we’d still track em down, even if the staff truancy enforcer had to get involved and find em out on the corner.

It’s just really weird that he’d fall in there, miss classes, be stuck in there during other classes, through dismissal, then he misses the bus or whatever, misses locker and packing up time at the end of the day, all while he’s dying of asphyxiation in an active gymnasium.

          • Malisha says:

IF they knew he went to get his shoes and IF he never showed up at the field house they would naturally have gone to check for him in the gym by the mats where they knew he stored his sneakers. But just hang around and then leave without solving the problem of “Where’s Kendrick”? In today’s world of text-me-text-you-text-everything? I don’t think so. Not believable. NOT.

          • Drew says:

            That’s what I’m sayin’.

  25. shyloh says:

I am interested in who in the world would remove his body parts and then replace them with newspaper? WHY??? That takes some time to do. Lord this case totally makes me sick to my stomach.

    • Trained Observer says:

Body parts are often removed to be weighed during the autopsy. Whoever conducted Kendrick’s post mortem exam might have some interesting observations on that. (I would like to know about the dates that might have been shown on the newspaper page folios that were stuffed in his body.)

      • shyloh says:

(I would like to know about the dates that might have been shown on the newspaper page folios that were stuffed in his body.)

        WOW! Now that is interesting.

  26. Mary Davis says:

    Professor, pease check your e-mail.

  27. Drew says:

I want to see footage of the mats. Like just at any point in the day, I want to see where they were and what they looked like. Even some footage from a few days before. I don’t believe one would be in the position they said it was in, nor large enough for a decent-sized kid to fall into.

Also, what was the time of death?

    • Lynn says:

I’ve heard they don’t have an exact time of death. It is usually determined by the vitreous humor in the eyes… And so convenient it is that they weren’t able to get blood or vitreous in the postmortem exam. They missed nothing in their cover-up.

I also heard his clothes were missing. They keep talking about how the organs were so decomposed they chunked them, but what excuse do you have for chunking his clothes? They should have been tagged and bagged and in police lock up.

      • Drew says:

Is that normal for organs to be so decomposed? If so, why aren’t they always tossed? How can they ever be used, if they decompose so badly and so quickly? Or do things work “differently” in Valdosta? Do the laws of time and space not apply?

      • looneydoone says:

It is unlawful to “chuck” tissue and/or organs. Medical bio-waste is hazardous, must be disposed of in an approved of container, and transported under manifest to a licensed disposal facility for incineration.

So, did those organs evidence foul play ? Torn spleen, global edema of the brain ? Hemmorage ?

  28. bettykath says:

Good question, Prof, but I think the pants he is wearing in the mat are just his jeans that rode “up” while he was inverted. It looks to me like there is enough fabric for the pants to go to his ankles if gravity were turned off or if he were upright.

    • bettykath says:

I also think that if he were wearing different pants his parents would have pointed this out before now.

      • bettykath says:

btw, same pants don’t eliminate his being in the locker room or bathroom.

      • crazy1946 says:

bettykath, Did I not hear that his clothing that was being worn at the time of his death was missing along with his internal organs? If that is the case, it is possible that the parents did not notice the change of clothing, or did not realize the importance of it? Hmm, it would still be nice to know the physical location of the locker room to the alleged location of the body when found…. especially in relation to any video equipment…

        • Xena says:

@crazy1946. You heard correctly. The parents have already pointed out that his top layer of clothes are missing. Kendrick wore two layers of clothes to school that morning. The gym shirt and shorts on his body when he was found, were underneath the white T and jeans that he we see him wearing when entering the gym.

    • ay2z says:

That is my impression too, bettykath. The bottoms are wide enough to ride up and even if not bunched up, the hem would be below the knee vs above.

the shoes placed in the mat have the appearance of an ‘afterthought’, and who reaches into a mat feet first. Makes no sense, even if the sneakers were at the bottom of a standing roll, they wouldn’t be neatly placed in that position, tightly together and not ‘below’ the feet.

      • Two sides to a story says:

Plus, the kids who placed shoes inside mats would do so in the horizontally placed mats, not at the inaccessible bottom of standing mats. Right?

        • bettykath says:

Unless someone threw the shoe in there as a “joke”.

        • I don’t know, but the mat in which they found his body was only 6 feet high when stood on end and he was 5’10” tall. The mat did not weigh very much and would have been easy to tilt or to lay it down on its side to reach anything at or near the bottom.

According to his father, the opening in the rolled up mat was 14 inches in diameter and KJ’s shoulders measured 19 inches from tip to tip.

I suspect that it would have been very difficult, if not impossible, for KJ to get himself into a position next to and above an upright rolled-up mat and insert his head and shoulders into that narrow opening without knocking the mat over.

In fact, under the circumstances, I cannot imagine why he would even attempt to do that as it would be easier to unroll the mat to get something wedged in the tube just beyond his reach from either end.

          • crazy1946 says:

            Posted at 12:12 PM today:

“I have more questions, but will end with this one, did they have some sort of restraint to hold the various rolled up mats in place that would have prevented the whole stack from toppling when Kendrick supposedly went out on top of them? If not what prevented them from acting like bowling pins and falling over? It is not like they were weighted at the bottom and I would think that they would have been easily toppled???? ”

Hmmm…. I guess he must have chosen the only section that was fastened to the floor with Velcro? Might I suggest if someone wishes to read some interesting background on Sheriff Prine, that you search for some of the comments made when he was running for election about his connection to some of the KKK style groups in the Valdosta area…. were they just idle election time rhetoric or were they true?

          • bettykath says:

The description I read is that the mat he was in was in the “middle” of many and when the coach/teacher went in he moved a lot mats to get this one. Some of the mats were heavy and not easily knocked over.

We need the videos and more photos. The crime, oops, accident [snark], scene photos were taken after the coach/teacher knocked the mats out of the way so we won’t know how they were stacked until we see a video.

          • William Walton says:

Prof, Man of Science Again; If one would try to enter a rolled up mat which is flexible, the force of gravity would pull the mat over. Keep in mind that the body would be extended above the top of the mat such that in layman’s terms would be top heavy causing a greater force of gravity to pull it to the ground level or get it stuck at an angle due to an obstruction. People do not realize how great a force that gravity exerts on various bodies. If the individual was rolled up in the mat, he had to be placed in the mat and then the mat rolled up.

          • Yes, that is the point that I was attempting to make. Thanks for the clarification.

      • Dave says:

If in fact he went into the rolled up mat to retrieve his shoes he wouldn’t have gone in head first; he would have extended his arms over his head to retrieve the shoes. When his hands reached the floor his feet and lower legs would have been found sticking out above the mat.

    • I thought about that, but the pants he’s wearing in the video appear to be green khakis, slim at the ankles and baggie up top, whereas the pants he’s wearing in the tube look like baggie bluejeans that extend to mid-calf when standing upright.

      • ay2z says:

Bears another closer look. Will do.

(if there was a change of clothing at all, where was it hidden or disposed of. by whom and what reason other than to hide something, if not a reasonable change by Kendrick, for use, or a certain distance in time from video to the mat.)

      • bettykath says:

His pants appear green in the photo you link to but in the video here http://www.11alive.com/news/article/311625/40/Video-to-be-released-in-Kendrick-Johnson-death at 1:15 where he walks through the light from the door, his pants appear blue and are described as jeans. Also, at 1:30, they also appear blue. If they are tight at the bottom, it would be more like a jogging suit with elastic at the bottom.

I don’t dismiss your view, but I’m also not convinced. We sure do need more information.

In the video I linked to, the announcer says that the part where he is in the hallway going into the gym is 10 minutes before the bit where he is in the gym and then the video fades to boys playing basketball but it’s clearly (imo) enough later (or a totally separate clip spliced in) that it’s hard to see its relationship to Kendrick’s presence.

        • Two sides to a story says:

They look like the slim-legged jeans that kids wear now, only he’s wearing them a size or two too big by the looks of them at the top.

  29. Drew says:

It’s possible that the cameras could have been purposely obscured, as well.

I think he was murdered off camera, possibly even off campus, then either rolled up in the mat somewhere else like the Prof said, and that perhaps the cameras were covered or de-activated in some way in order to set everything up with the mat in the gym.

Either that, or the idiots who did this were caught on camera and we’ll find that out in the coming days / weeks.

    • Malisha says:

Or there were videos of the murder and some accessories-after-the-fact “disappeared” them…

    • crazy1946 says:

Drew, With your prior response to me about the access to the video equipment, would you not lean toward a member of the school IT staff or even higher being involved in a cover up?

      • Drew says:

If stuff got erased or tampered with in any way, I think that school staff would have to be somewhat involved in some level of the cover up at that point, unless school staff said to law enforcement, “Here’s our security system, please do what you want with it.”

  30. crazy1946 says:

I suppose my thoughts are a little disorganized this morning and I failed to ask this question. I have heard several references to this as being the “old gym”, are there two (or more) gyms located at this facility? Do we have any diagram showing the floor plan of the gym that was the scene of the alleged murder? If so, where are the locker rooms located in relation to the area where the body was found? There was mention of a ball game that evening, did it take place in this gym? If so, how was it possible that someone in the stands next to where the body was found did not see the body? I have more questions, but will end with this one, did they have some sort of restraint to hold the various rolled up mats in place that would have prevented the whole stack from toppling when Kendrick supposedly went out on top of them? If not what prevented them from acting like bowling pins and falling over? It is not like they were weighted at the bottom and I would think that they would have been easily toppled???? Too many questions in this case and not enough realistic answers….

  31. crazy1946 says:

Professor, I might suggest one minor change in your scenario and that would be to change the location from a “bathroom” to the boys “locker room”, that would probably be a more likely location.

  32. crazy1946 says:

” Also may have been an opportune location to roll him up in a mat.”

Interesting theory, now can you offer a means of getting the mat to where it was allegedly found without being obvious in the possible video of the process?

    • That’s why I used the word “may.”

Without knowing time of death, location of bathrooms, location of all cameras and whether they were operational 24/7, KJ’s class attendance record and viewing all of the videotapes to determine where he was all day, I’m just asking questions, throwing out observations and offering up some guesses to stimulate discussion.

      • crazy1946 says:

Ouch, point noted, will now scurry for the exit and go quietly about my business… Have a good afternoon…

        • Easy, Mr. Crazy.

You asked a legitimate question. I did not take offense and did not intend to express any criticism in my response.

I apologize if I came across that way.

I love whodunits and welcome discussion.

          • crazy1946 says:

Professor, It was not your response so much as some of the information that I have been finding out involving this case has me on edge emotionally, and I suppose that is causing me to be overly cautious in my comments. All’s well, just a little glitch in communication…..
